  • Good Friday 2006

    I’m busting Jerry, I’m busting!

This might not resonate with readers outside of the Philly area, but I must share this extraordinary news nonetheless.

This morning I drove down Lancaster Ave. (Rt. 30), from the junction of Rt. 252 in Paoli all the way to Radnor-Chester Rd. in St. Davids, without hitting any red lights. If my calculations are correct, that is 18 lights without stopping! The perfect trip! How preposterous is that?

If you’re not familiar with the area, Lancaster Ave. is the most direct (but hardly the fastest) route from Philadelphia to the western ‘burbs, signifying the famous Main Line. (It is also part of the famous Lincoln Highway.) It’s a four lane (two in each direction) road that goes through many towns and has many lights, simlilar to a Commenwealth Ave. in Boston or Broad St. in Richmond.

    …now that’s what I call a Good Friday.

  • Candy Tasting and Reviewing Fun

So the wife and I were up in New York this weekend to see our friend John performing in in La Forza Del Destino, the Moscow Cat Theater, and some other fun activities including a visit to Dylan’s Candy Bar.

A fun and playful 2-story candy store, Dylan’s was too crowded for my taste but included a collection of obscure and old-skool candies that made it worth the trip. We wound up spending about $30 on candy bars at ~$1.50 a pop. Below we shall review them as we eat them – look for regular updates.

  • Ode to Spring

    Temperature’s a rising,
    Coeds frolic and play
    Hottie in a ragtop ‘Stang
    Effin’ A man. Effin’ A.

Sun still up when I drive home
    Birds begin to sing
    Hottie in a ragtop ‘Stang
Hells yeah, it must be Spring.

  • Lightness

I left work the other day around 5:30 (admittedly a bit early for me), and it was still light out!

Sure, we haven’t had the coldest winter of record (and snow has been noticeably absent), but this was still a great feeling. I haven’t seen the light of day after work since October, so even though it was dark 15 minutes later, it was a sign of things to come. When do pitchers and catchers report?

Not all news about the upcoming warm weather is good...

5 points if you get the musical connection with the post title…

  • Life and Money

I ran into a former teacher/coach recently, and we had the following brief exchange:

Mike: Hey Mr. Teacher, how are you doing?
Teacher: Hey Mike, How are you? You making some good money?
Mike: Uh, I guess I’m doing ok.
Teacher: You’ve been out of school a while now, you should be making some good money.
    Mike: Ummm, sure.
Teacher: Alright Mike, I’ll see ya.

  • The Random Restaurant Meet

Is there proper etiquette for when you run into someone you know at a restaurant? Are you expected to get up and go over to their table, or does a wave and a smile suffice? If you do stop at the table, how long should you stand there? On one hand, you don’t want to cut the conversation short, but on the other hand, standing by one table is standing by several others in most restaurants. I wouldn’t want some bozo standing next to my table talking to their friends. If there is an extra table nearby, should you sit down at that table and have a longer conversation? Ask the waiter if you can move?

This has happened to me quite often recently. Just the other day I ran into my buddy Leebo (who was on a date with a girl I didn’t know, complicating the situation even further). I decided to send him a text message saying “I see u”. He got freaked out and looked around the reastaurant. After noticing us, he came over to say hi. I was left thinking, should I have gone over to his table? Was that rude of me? Did we chat long enough?

Just when you thought it was safe to go out to eat…

  • Victory Brewing Company

Victory Brewing Company is a brewery in Downingtown, PA that produces some of the most hearty, delicious and strong beers to be had in our fine nation today. Your author is privileged and grateful to be able to drive only a few minutes to savor Victory beers from the tap, sample their menu, and bask in the camaraderie of their brewpub clientele. But, there is one incredibly massive fly in the Victory ointment, and I aim to address it here – not because I’m upset about one meal but because I am proud to support this great local business and it grinds my gears that I can’t reliably take friends or family there to dine because the foodservice is horrible! • Memories of Sleepaway Camp

In between 8th and 9th grade and again between 9th and 10th grade, I attended the NewSport Experience Camp in Kents Hill, Maine. Contrary to other sleepover camp experience that I had in my childhood, I loved this place. It was all about sports and many of my friends attended with me. Although I have a lot of hazy memories about what we did at camp, what it looked like, and who I met, I am able to recall a few specific facts with complete certainty:

    1) Shinehead’s “Gimme No Crack” – Previous to downloading it a few months ago (solely for the nostalgic value), I did not hear this song before or after attending NewSport even one time. I have no idea where it came from or why we thought it was such a good song, but we listened to it constantly. It’s actually a preposterous song, but one worth having around just to see if anyone you know has ever heard it (I’ve yet to find someone).

    2) Geto Boys’ “Gangsta of Love” – When I heard this years later, I was quite disappointed. It seems that blending a cheesy 70’s tune with gangster rap should produce something a bit more fun, but this song really isn’t that great. (Didn’t stop us from listening to it every frickin’ day.) I suppose, however, that this could be part of the reason I liked the Steve Miller Band so much in high school, particularly “The Joker”.

    3) Guns N’ Roses – “Civil War” – One night my camp roommate Dennie and I were listening to the radio when we were supposed to be in bed, and we heard the debut of the new Guns N’ Roses song (which we’d anxiously been anticipating for some time) on some Maine radio station. The remarkable thing about this is that Use Your Illusion I & II did not come out for some 14 months after this fateful night, and I did not hear this song again (this is pre-internet, remember) until the day I walked from my parents house to the closest record store (because my mom would not drive me) to pick up the much anticipated double release. I suppose I should have taken this delay as a sign of things to come.

    4) Lauren Young – At a dance with some neighboring girls camp (NewSport was all guys), I danced with Ms. Young for several songs. I may have claimed to kiss her to several people over the course of my life, but this is not even remotely true. I wouldn’t have had any idea how to do something like that. My friends all claimed that Lauren had purple (or green, blue, w/e) hair, but I cannot confirm this. As is common in junior high school dances, it was quite dark. I may have written to Lauren once or twice, but I really don’t remember. I can, however, picture the little scrap of paper on which she wrote her address. She had nice handwriting.

    5) Pete McKernan – He was my favorite counselor at NewSport, just an all-around great guy. He also happened to be the son of the Governor of Maine. Pete died a few years later, I heard through the grapevine. I don’t know much else. R.I.P. Pete.

In conclusion, it sure is interesting what you remember about these experiences.

BTW, if NewSport sounds fun, check out Camp GoodSport, run by the same guy.
