  • “It’s an early edition of The Velveteen Rabbit”

There’s this episode of Friends where Chandler buys Kathy — Joey’s flavor of the week and the girl he is completely infatuated with — an “early edition of The Velveteen Rabbit“. Joey asks if there was “any change from that $20”, to which Chandler snarkily replies “no, it came to an even $20”.

So, of course, I looked it up. The Velveteen Rabbit was published in 1922. I figured an “early edition” would be anything published before 1950, but in my travels I could only find First Editions from ’22 and then issues no earlier than 1975.

The cheapest first edition I could find, of course, was $17,436.69. I guess rent control in that building is better than I ever knew.

  • Good Friday 2006

    I’m busting Jerry, I’m busting!

This might not resonate with readers outside of the Philly area, but I must share this extraordinary news nonetheless.

This morning I drove down Lancaster Ave. (Rt. 30), from the junction of Rt. 252 in Paoli all the way to Radnor-Chester Rd. in St. Davids, without hitting any red lights. If my calculations are correct, that is 18 lights without stopping! The perfect trip! How preposterous is that?

If you’re not familiar with the area, Lancaster Ave. is the most direct (but hardly the fastest) route from Philadelphia to the western ‘burbs, signifying the famous Main Line. (It is also part of the famous Lincoln Highway.) It’s a four lane (two in each direction) road that goes through many towns and has many lights, simlilar to a Commenwealth Ave. in Boston or Broad St. in Richmond.

    …now that’s what I call a Good Friday.

  • We Are the Animals of the North Pole…

…we wear top hats, because it’s cold. We like snowmen, because they’re nice… what the hell!?!…

Does anyone besides me (and this dude – not safe for work) remember this commercial?

It was for ESPN’s Winter X Games, and it featured a bunch of claymation animals hanging in the snow with a snowman, singing. Right when the got to “nice”, some skier or snowboarder came flying out of nowhere and busted up these clay characters all over the place.

Sooo stupid, but absolutely classic. I would pay top $$$ for a digital copy of this bad boy.

  • When You Talk About Playground Legends, You Gotta Bring Up a Guy Named Lamar Mundane

All I can say is WOW. I’m pretty friggin’ stoked about this one. In ten years of scouring the far corners of the internet for arbitrary pieces of pop Americana, this is one of my all time favorite finds. When I was a kid, this baby wiiiired me up!

    Incredible.

  • Top 10 Hottest Tickets in Sports

Darren Rovell of the worldwide leader recently posted his top 10 “hottest tickets in American sports”. I agree with Rovell on the Derby, Sox-Yanks at Fenway, and Duke-Carolina at Cameron, but I’ve got 7 others I’d rather see than what he lists:

World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, Jacksonville, FL: The Florida – Georgia football game may be the toughest College Football ticket in the nation; seats are available online for no less than $300 for the ’06 game in APRIL. The party starts up Thursday and runs hard through Thursday night, not to mention that it’s October in Florida. And you’d prefer to be at The Masters?

Cowboys @ Eagles, October 8, 2006, Philadelphia, PA: OK, so maybe this is just a one-off, but consider this: who in their right mind scheduled this game — T.O.’s return to the City of Brotherly Love — at 4pm in early October? Half of the crowd will have been drinking since 8 a.m. Enough said.
