  • Dear Sox, Don’t Sign Clemens

Rumors abound that the Red Sox have approached Roger Clemens about coming back to the team.

I originally tried to articulate how much this upsets me, but I failed for one of two reasons: 1) I couldn’t seem to accurately express my distaste for Clemens, or 2) I didn’t have the patience to list out the lengthy number of examples against his character.

Thinking about it more thoroughly, however, what bothers me is this: We all know that professional sports are driven by money first and loyalty second; gone are the days of players sticking for one team for their entire careers, becoming synonymous with a franchise. Rooting for a favorite team is rooting for a uniform more than a specific player, as free-agency precipitates a massive swapping of players each and every off-season.

As sports fans, we know in our minds that this is true, but in our hearts we cling to the idea that maybe, just maybe, there is something more. That each time the Red Sox and Yankees take the field, the venom rises and the hatred the fans have for the other side is shared by the players, that they’d never swap shirts for all the money in the world. Its a thin thread that we cling to, but we cling nonetheless — it keeps sports interesting.

Signing Clemens would shatter that ideal. After all he’s done, all he is — a Hall of Famer in a Yankee cap, if it was up to him — the last place he should ever be is Boston. The Sox are as guilty as any franchise of player swapping, even gutting a championship team just weeks after the clinching win, but this would be taking it too far. Signing Clemens would confirm once and for all that loyalty and love of Red Sox Nation matters so much less than money, money, money. If they bring back The Rocket, they might as well trade Manny & Big Papi for Jeter and A-Rod, just to make the destruction complete.

So, if you’re listening Boston, don’t let this happen. There are more important things than championships.

  • Reunion Redux

So Fox finally cancelled Reunion, as I accurately predicted in October. This post generated a lot of criticism, but I think my comments were vindicated by the fact that not enough people were watching for Fox to keep it going. Eat crow, flamers!

My favorite comment (aside from the person who inexplicably concluded that I must be a callous person) was this one:
“How can you think Reunion is terrible?! It’s probably one of the best shows out there. I don’t think anyone agrees with you.”

Um, nobody agrees with me? Fox has really made a terrible mistake then, haven’t they? Of course, hardly anybody cares about the show, so maybe they just haven’t taken the time to agree.

Ironically, I actually thought the show was getting more bearable. I even enjoyed a few episodes! I wasn’t really upset that it is cancelled, but I didn’t hate it as much as I should have.

I think the sports guy summed it up best, during a plea to keep the show around, when he predicted the following would happen if Fox showed a Reunion marathon one weekend:
“[People will] watch the first [episode], think it’s terrible, vow to stop watching it, then inexplicably keep watching. By the third show, not only will they be hooked, they’ll feel like an idiot for being hooked. But they’ll keep watching.”

  • More Taylor Townsend

Actually, less Taylor Townsend. No Taylor, no good times on The O.C.

Tonight’s episode was horrible… That whole Seth-Summer competition thing? Bor-ing… Bring back Taylor!

Time to resurrect an old favorite, Songoose’s Top 5 Christmas Albums.

  • Taylor Townsend

As someone not famous once said, “If loving Taylor Townsend is wrong, I don’t want to be right.”

  • Would You Rather: Pork or Poultry?

Today’s “would you rather” question: Would you rather completely give up pork or poultry?

At first, I thought that giving up pork was the easy choice, because I eat poultry almost every day. Turkey sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, chicken breast, chicken cutlet, etc. Poultry is great.

The more I think about it, however, I realize that poultry, with few exceptions, produces pedestrian meals. Sure, I’ve had some great turkey sandwiches every now and again, but for the most part they are usually run of the mill. Pork, on the other hand, is transcendant far more often: pulled pork barbeque, for example, can linger for weeks. Italian pulled pork or roast pork, Philly-style, gives the cheesesteak a run for its money every day of the week. And, that’s not even to mention sausage and BACON. As Emeril says, pork fat rules.

Looking at it again, it is a pretty simple choice, actually. Bye Bye Poultry! (I would sure miss Thanksgiving though.)
