In general, their inablity to not give up crappy fouls at inopportune times. The one that got me the most was when either Jones or Dentmon gave a reach-in foul just as the shot clock hits 25 and the ball was still in UConn’s backcourt. That’s the kind of foul that makes a coach’s blood boil. Jones 5th was also a total tick-tack foul, just a stupid play by a supposed team leader who knew he was playing with 4.

4. Roy getting in Gay’s face and picking up his 4th on the technical with 13 mins to go. Granted, had the whistle-happy officials let the players decide the game, this might not be an issue, but as the senior leader of the team and clearly the best player on the court, Roy should know better than to let some punk-ass freshman wind him up. As much as they had plenty of chances to win the game after this point, effectively it was over when Roy went to the bench. I truly believe UW wins in regulation without this call.

3. Allowing Anderson to get the ball on the wing, his favorite spot, twice in the last minute. Everyone watching knew what UConn was going to do — except the friggin’ guys in purple. On the shot that tied the game, Appelby would have been far better off giving the foul while denying him the ball than letting him catch and shoot. Basketball basics, guys.

2. Not calling timeout after the Appelby steal with 11 seconds left in OT. The announcers seemed to think that Appelby should have gone right to the hoop, but he felt the defense would not allow it — which I don’t disagree with. Either way, once he decided to pull it out, they should have used their last timeout. They had enough time to set up a play and were clearly a bit flustered, as evidenced by the terrible crosscourt pass that ended UW’s chances.

1. Mike Jensen fouls Marcus Williams on a layup with 11 seconds left in regulation and UW up 4. Instead of being up two and headed back to the foul line (where Brandon Roy hit both), they were only up 1, then 3 after the FTs, allowing for the aforementioned Anderson 3 to tie it. What the hell was Jensen thinking? Not only did he have 4 fouls, he had no angle on Williams. At some point, as a player, you have to realize that its more likely that you’re giving up a 3 point play than blocking the shot. And quite simply, if he doesn’t commit this foul, this game has a different outcome. One of the stupidest plays I’ve seen all tournament long.

5. In general, their inablity to not give up crappy fouls at inopportune times.
